Wales Hold Ghana to 1-1 Draw

Date:

Carlos Queiroz nearly recorded his first win in his first official game in charge of the Black Stars of Ghana.

Budding youngster Caleb Yirenkyi bagged his first-ever goal for his motherland against Wales in a pre-world cup friendly.

Craig Bellamy and his Welsh stars were left red-faced in Cardiff on Tuesday night in front of their fans and Ghanaian supporters.

The Black Stars produced a strong defensive performance in the first half to keep the Red Dragons at bay with Lawrence Ati-Zigi making sensational saves.

Ghana looked much better in the second half. A good press on the Welsh backline resulted in Brandon Thomas-Asante dispossessing Ampadu for Ernest Nuamah to sprint from the halfway line towards the goal. Nuamah’s shot in the 18-yard deflected off a defender, hitting the post and falling to Yirenkyi to tap home.

Second half substitute Kumas broke Ghanaian hearts with a stoppage time equalizer, changing the mood of thousands of Wales supporters to that of a carnival.

The Black Stars would be encouraged by their performance ahead of their final friendly against Jamaica on June 10th as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
