President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate cancellation of fuel allowance payments and allocations for all political appointees, as part of broader efforts to reduce public spending.

The decision was communicated in a statement issued on Tuesday, July 15, and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications.

According to the presidency, the measure is intended to curb unnecessary expenditure and channel government resources into critical priority sectors.

“This directive forms part of ongoing fiscal reforms to ensure that limited national resources are used efficiently,” the statement read.

The move is expected to bolster public confidence in government austerity efforts amid growing calls for accountability and economic discipline.

“The President believes that leadership must share in the sacrifices it demands of citizens,” the statement emphasized, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to lead by example amid growing economic challenges.

The cancellation of fuel allowances forms part of a broader austerity drive by the Mahama government.

Recent cost-cutting steps include:

  • A reduction in the size of government, with fewer ministerial and presidential staff appointments

  • Cancellation of satellite TV subscriptions at the Presidency and other state agencies

The announcement comes just 24 hours ahead of the rollout of the new GHS1.00 fuel levy, which will apply to every litre purchased at the pump—adding urgency to the government’s call for shared sacrifice.
