Kwesi Nyantakyi launches Prisons Football Project

Date:

Former GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi has vowed to dedicate the rest of his life to supporting inmates in Ghana’s prisons.

He made the pledge at the launch of the Prisons Football Project on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

The initiative, in partnership with the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), aims to use sports to aid inmate rehabilitation and reintegration.

As part of the event, Nyantakyi and his team donated footballs, jerseys, basketballs, volleyballs, and other sporting equipment to the Ghana Prisons Service.

Sharing what inspired his commitment, Nyantakyi recounted a recent visit to his jailed friend, Alhaji Inusah, a former Wa All Stars chairman.

“I never thought about prison until I came to visit Inusah. He went to his land with a pump-action gun after hearing it was being sold. He fired a warning shot into the ground. The bullet ricocheted, killing two innocent people. That mistake landed him in prison. It could happen to anyone.”

Nyantakyi pledged to fund legal representation for inmates who lacked lawyers during their trials and revealed plans to file an appeal for Inusah.

Deputy Director of Prisons, Patrick Thomas Seidu, praised the initiative, stressing that incarceration should be seen as a path to reform, not a dead end.

“Inmates have only lost some liberties, not their rights. Our role is to help them reform and return to society as law-abiding citizens.”

The Prisons Football Project is designed to use sport as a tool for rehabilitation, morale building, and reintegration.
