The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) expresses its deepest condolences to the family of Francis Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley, and extends sympathies to Kumasi Asante Kotoko following his tragic death.
In a statement signed by President Kwabena Yeboah, SWAG urgently calls for a thorough investigation into the incident that led to the fatal stabbing of Nana Pooley, ensuring the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
“We strongly condemn the persistent hooliganism and thuggery tarnishing our local football leagues,” the statement read. SWAG is deeply shocked by the violent clashes during the Nsoatreman-Kotoko match, which resulted in unnecessary loss of life.
The statement described the violence and destruction on and off the pitch as unacceptable, emphasizing that such acts endanger innocent fans who attend matches for entertainment, not to risk their lives.
“The safety and security of fans must be paramount, and hooliganism cannot be allowed to thrive,” it added.
SWAG urges the Government of Ghana, Ghana Football Association (GFA), National Sports Authority (NSA), and security agencies to take decisive action to curb football-related violence. Key demands include:
- Disciplinary action by the GFA against teams and individuals involved in violence.
- Enhanced security measures at match venues by the NSA and security agencies.
- A comprehensive strategy by the GFA and NSA to combat hooliganism and promote fair play.
Additionally, SWAG calls on the GFA to collaborate with the Ghana Police Service to prosecute offenders and impose permanent bans on culprits to deter future incidents.
“We urge all stakeholders—fans, players, coaches, and administrators—to join us in condemning hooliganism and fostering a culture of peace, fair play, and respect in Ghana football. Let’s work together to protect the beautiful game.”
