Mahama’s Historic Inauguration: Key Details and Security Measure Today

The inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, scheduled for Tuesday, January 7, 2025, is poised to be a landmark occasion, garnering national and global attention.

A Momentous Event

Marking Mahama’s return to the presidency, the ceremony will host an impressive array of dignitaries, including 21 Heads of State, three Vice Presidents, four Ministers, and 24 envoys. This gathering highlights Ghana’s growing stature in international diplomacy and its reputation for peaceful political transitions.

The Ministry of Information has confirmed the attendance of notable global figures, underscoring the significance of this historic event.


Comprehensive Security Plan

The Ghana Police Service has announced robust security measures to ensure a safe and smooth inauguration process.
Key security updates include:

Designated Security Perimeters

The following areas will be under heightened security:

  • Ako Adjei Interchange
  • AU Roundabout
  • State House
  • Osu Cemetery Traffic Light
  • Accra Sports Stadium
  • Independence Square
  • Ministries Traffic Light
  • Customs Headquarters Traffic Light
  • Gamel Abdul Nasser Avenue

Road Closures and Traffic Diversions

To manage traffic around the swearing-in venue, road closures will be enforced between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM on January 7, 2025.

Road Closures:

  • 28th February Road (Customs Headquarters to Castle Road Junction)
  • Lokko Street (Osu Cemetery Traffic Light to AU Roundabout)
  • Starlet 91 Road (Ministries Traffic Light to Accra Sports Stadium)

Traffic Diversions:

  • Motorists from La, Labone, and Osu to the Central Business District (CBD) will be redirected via Salem Avenue to Oxford Street.
  • Vehicles from John Evans Atta Mills High Street heading to Independence Square must use Liberia Road at the Customs Headquarters Traffic Light Intersection.
  • Drivers on Lokko Street will be rerouted via Ajumaku and Oxford Streets.

Parking and Public Access

Designated parking areas include:

  • The Forecourt of the State House
  • Effua Sutherland Park
  • Ministry of Food and Agriculture premises

Residents and attendees are encouraged to adhere to police directives and use alternative routes where possible.


Parliamentary Swearing-In

Ahead of the presidential ceremony, newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) and the Speaker of Parliament will be sworn in on Monday, January 6, 2025, at Parliament House.


Ban on Drones

The Ministry of National Security has prohibited the use of private drones around Black Star Square during the inauguration. This precautionary measure aims to safeguard the event against potential security threats.


A Historic Transition

With comprehensive security and logistical arrangements in place, Ghana is set for a smooth and momentous transfer of power. President-elect John Dramani Mahama will assume office alongside Vice President-elect Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, heralding a new chapter in the country’s democratic journey.
