The news of Rúben Amorim’s departure to Manchester United did not go down well within the Sporting squad.
Several players questioned the coach about his decision to leave the team just two months into the season when they met at the team’s training base ahead of the game against Nacional.
As the coach admitted in the post-match press conference, even in training that morning, before it started, he had to take “an elephant out of the room”, also saying that the players didn’t even pay attention to the talk before the match with Nacional, given the noise that surrounded them.
O JOGO reported that the news of the Red Devils’ interest and the possibility of the coach leaving, left particularly dissatisfied the likes of Gyokeres and Hjulmand, who had offers to leave in the summer transfer window, but who were “enticed” to stay at Sporting due to the project of winning the championship twice and the continuity of Rúben Amorim.
After the victory against Nacional, a game in which he scored twice, the Swedish forward tried to avoid the topic of the day, avoiding commenting on the situation at hand. “He [Rúben Amorim] is here and that’s what I’m focused on, we’ll see what happens, I’m not going to wear myself out. It’s not something I know about, it’s not about me”, he told Sport TV.
