The Black Princesses of Ghana suffered an underserving 2-1 defeat to Austria in their 2024 U-20 FIFA World Cup opener in Bogota, Colombia.
Austrian goalkeeper, Mariella El Sherif was instrumental in her side’s success with the help of the crossbar, limiting Ghana to just a lone goal.
The Austrians struck early through Hannah Fankhauser in the 12th minute before Greta Spinn nearly doubled their lead if not for the quick reflexes of Northern Ladies goalkeeper, Afi Amenyeku.
Tracey Twum and captain Stella Nyamekye forced a couple of fantastic saves from El Sherif just before the end of the first half.
Nyamekye finally got her goal after Nicole Ojukwu had scored Austria’s second through the penalty spot.
Yusif Bassigi’s men will face Japan next with the hope of getting maximum points on Thursday, September 5, at 10 p.m., for a chance of making it to the next round.
