MAX LIFESTYLE : How to stop dental cavities from worsening

Date:

Dental cavities, or tooth decay, are a prevalent issue affecting people of all ages. They occur when bacteria in the mouth produce acids, eroding teeth enamel and dentin. If left untreated, cavities can worsen and lead to significant oral health issues. Here are a few effective strategies to safeguard your oral health.

Do not ignore oral hygiene

Cavities can be prevented through a strong oral hygiene routine, including brushing teeth twice daily, preferably in the morning and before bedtime, using fluoride toothpaste, and flossing daily to remove plaque and food particles between teeth.

Always pick the right toothbrush and toothpaste

To prevent dental cavities, use a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride toothpaste strengthens enamel and prevents cavities. Antiseptic mouthwashes reduce bacteria in the mouth, decreasing the risk of cavities. Choose a fluoride-containing mouthwash approved by dental professionals. Both methods are gentle on enamel and gums.

Cut down on consumption of sugar and acidic foods

Sugary and acidic foods contribute to cavity formation and progression, while bacteria feed on sugar erode tooth enamel. Reduce sugar consumption, rinse mouth with water, and brush teeth if possible.

Opt for sugar-free gum

Chewing sugar-free gum can stimulate saliva production, neutralize mouth acids, and remineralizer teeth. A dry mouth increases cavity risk. You also stay hydrated by drinking water, using xylitol gum for cavity-fighting properties, and using sugar-free lozenges or saliva substitutes. You need to consult a dentist for personalized recommendations for chronic dry mouth.

Drink water with fluoride

Fluoride-rich water can prevent cavities by strengthening tooth enamel. If municipal water doesn’t, consider fluoride supplements, bottled water, or mouth rinses recommended by dentists.

Quit smoking and avoid tobacco products

Smoking and tobacco use are harmful to your oral health and can worsen cavities. Quitting smoking and avoiding tobacco products can reduce your risk of cavities, as well as other dental issues like gum disease and oral cancer.

Regular dental check-ups are essential for cavity prevention and early detection, with dentists identifying early stages and providing appropriate treatment, typically every six months, depending on individual needs.
