AshantiGold set to play in Division Two League next season after losing match-fixing appeal

Date:

According to reports, AshantiGold’s appeal regarding match-fixing was denied, and they will compete in Division Two League next year.

The former Ghana Premier League (GPL) champions were expelled to the second-tier league after being found guilty of rigging matches.

The final matchday of the 2020–21 season saw Ashgold play a prearranged match versus Inter Allies, according to a May report from the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Disciplinary Committee.

Inter Allies defender Hashmin Musah admitted to scoring two own goals in the game’s 7-0 final score to thwart a match-fixing conspiracy.

After lengthy investigations that lasted months, a judgement was reached, but the Miners firmly maintained their innocence and appealed the decision.

The GFA’s Appeal Committee reportedly rejected Ashgold’s appeal and affirmed the Disciplinary Committee’s ruling, according to sources in the local media.

Ashgold will therefore start the following season in the second-tier league while their president, Dr. Kwaku Frimpong, and chief executive, Emmanuel Frimpong, are both serving lengthy suspensions.

The Ghana FA has planned the next regular congress for Thursday, August 18, just before the 2022–23 season gets underway.

Congress will give its approval for the promotion and relegation of teams in the Ghana Premier League (GPL), National Division One League (DOL), and Women’s Premier League.
