Following death threats from irate
supporters, head coach Ansu Keita of
Liberia missed their most recent 2026
FIFA World Cup qualifier.
He was not present for Liberia’s
1-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea on Monday in Monrovia. This was the team’s sixth straight loss.
After a post-match news conference was delayed due to supporters smashing a glass shield at the media center, Keita and his players sought refuge inside their dressing room.
“I told him that I would still go to the game,” Keita told BBC Sport Africa.
“If Liberians want to kill me for football, then let them kill me.”
However, on Saturday morning, Keita was met by the LFA vice president, Adolphus Dolo, who advised him to stay away.
“I knew what the outcome of the meeting was when they came,” said Keita
“So I told them, ‘I will not go for the game. I will recuse myself.’
