The German technical director at the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Winfried Schafer, is upbeat about the Black Stars after their loss to Nigeria.
Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers and Semi Ajayi handed the Super Eagles of Nigeria a 2-1 win over the Black Stars of Ghana in the second match of the 2025 Unity Cup.
Despite the defeat, Schafer remains optimistic about the future of the Black Stars, as young talents such as Aaron Essel, Christopher Bonus Baah, Caleb Yirenkyi, and Mohammed Fuseini showed a lot of promise.
In an exclusive talk on Max FM’s Sports Pack show, the former AFCON-winning gaffer said, “Ghana’s defeat is a positive signal for the young and local players, as Nigeria played with an older team.”
The technical team of the Black Stars has always considered the tournament as a perfect opportunity to assess the strength, especially with the inclusion of young and local talents ahead of the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers in September 2025.
With Ghana missing out on the final against Schafer’s former team, Jamaica, they will face Trinidad and Tobago in a third/fourth place match on Saturday, May 31, 2025, live on Max TV.
