The administration of President John Dramani Mahama will scale down this year’s Independence Day celebration by relocating the parade to Jubilee House as a cost-cutting measure.
Addressing the media, Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced that the regional rotational celebration has been suspended due to financial constraints.
He revealed that the 2023 event in Ho cost the nation GHS 15 million, highlighting the additional expenses incurred whenever the celebrations are hosted outside the capital.
“While the rotational policy was well-intentioned, President Mahama has directed its suspension due to escalating costs. Given the country’s economic challenges and budget constraints, maintaining the rotation is unsustainable,” he stated.
As part of broader efforts to curb non-essential spending, the government has also decided to scale back the main celebration, traditionally held at Independence Square. Despite the adjustments, President Mahama remains committed to honoring this significant national event in a modest yet meaningful manner, ensuring fiscal responsibility while preserving its historical importance.
