On Sunday, July 24, 2022, the Black Galaxies dominated Benin 3-0 in the first leg of the penultimate qualifying round for the 2023 CHAN.
After setting up Hearts of Oak star Daniel Afriyie Barnieh in the 15th minute, Jonah Attuquaye nearly gave Ghana the lead, but goalkeeper Adebiyi Serge Obassa made a spectacular stop.
Ten minutes later, Afriyie Barnieh scored from the penalty spot to give the Black Galaxies the lead.
Evans Osei Wusu’s attempt was blocked by a defender for Benin with his hand inside the penalty area, giving Ghana a penalty.
After a corner kick, Mohammed Alhassan, a central defender for Ghana, scored to increase their lead four minutes into the second half.
Osei-close-range Wusu’s attempt was deflected away to corner after Serge Obassa, the goalkeeper for Benin, made another excellent save to prevent Ghana from scoring a third goal.
Gladson Awako, the captain of the Black Galaxies, added to the score with a magnificent goal for his team. Following a sharp pass from Umar Bashiru, Awako curled a shot from within the box past goalie Serge Obassa.
