#WorldAthletics: Kenyan world record holder dies in car crash

The world of athletics has been sent into a state of mourning following the death of world marathon holder Kelvin Kiptum, who died in a car crash.

The Kenyan was believed to have lost control of his vehicle while driving in Kaptagat, Kenya, around 11 p.m.

Raila Odinga, Kenya’s prime minister, amongst others, paid tributes after the news broke to the late Kenyan athlete and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, who also died in the crash.

“Devastating news as we mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, Kelvin Kiptum, world record holder and Kenyan athletics icon. Together with his coach, they tragically passed on in an accident tonight. Our nation grieves the profound loss of a true hero,” Raila Odinga posted on X.

The world athletics president, Lord Sebatian Coe, also expressed his sadness at the loss of Kiptum.

“shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kiptum and Hakizimana. “An incredible athlete leaving an incredible legacy, we will miss him dearly,” he said.
