The head coach of the Black Stars of Ghana, Otto Addo, has stated that the decision on whether to start Benjamin Asare or not rests on him.
Since the inclusion of Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Asare into the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar was announced, many have suggested the head coach start him in goal.
Asare is considered by a section of fans to be far better than current number one goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who had shipped in four goals in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
However, Otto Addo does not appear swayed by how fans and other football pundits have waxed lyrical about the Phobian captain, despite describing himself as a “listening coach” at the press conference held on the eve of the game against Chad.
“First of all with me, it’s all about the performance. It doesn’t matter the position. It’s always performance. It’s not about somebody saying this, somebody saying that. I listen, I hear a lot of things, but at the end I will make the decision together with Fatau,” he said.
Ghana’s first game of the 2025 calendar year is scheduled to come off at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 21.
