Raphael would be alive if the defibrillator had not been removed – Spanish Doctor

Date:

The doctor who implanted the defibrillator in the late Raphael Dwamena has told Spanish newspaper Heraldo, that the player would still be alive if he had not removed the defibrillator.

Dwamena lost his life after he collapsed on the field of play on Saturday, November 11, 2023, when his side, KF Egnatia were in action in the Albanian Super League.

Dr. Asso advised Dwamena to retire from the profession to protect his heart when his condition was first detected in Spain.

However, with so much love for the game, the Ghanaian chose to continue fulfilling his dream as a footballer.

“We managed to convince him of the urgent need to implant a defibrillator to at least guarantee his life, at the same time as we advised against playing professional sports,” he wrote.

“He placed all his trust in us, and after implanting the defibrillator he left Spain. Sometimes he would ask me for specific advice, which I would gladly respond to.

“I was determined to follow his professional career above all else and I ended up losing hope of influencing him.

“He died as a result of a respectable personal decision, but if the defibrillator had not been removed, Raphael would still be alive,” Dr. Asso said.
