Guinea have officially secured a spot in the 2024 Olympics after defeating Indonesia (1-0) in the intercontinental play-off on Thursday afternoon.
This victory at Clairefontaine has guaranteed the Syli National U23 a place in the highly anticipated Paris Olympics, set to take place from July 24 to August 9, 2024.
The match was a tough one for the Guinea U23 team, with a strong performance from their opponents.
Despite creating several great opportunities in the first half, it was a penalty from Ilaix Moriba (28th) that ultimately sealed the win for Guinea.
As a result, the Olympic selection team will now move on to compete in the upcoming Olympics.
Although the game was a challenging one, with Indonesia dominating in the second half, Algassime Bah and his teammates managed to maintain their narrow lead until the final whistle.
Bah failed to extend the advantage for Kaba Diawara’s side after he missed a penalty kick in the 76th minute.
This historic victory marks the return of Guinea to the Olympics after an absence of over five decades.
The last time Syli National participated in the competition was back in 1968 in Mexico.
They will now join France, the United States, and New Zealand in Pool A and become the fourth African nation to compete at the 2024 Olympics, alongside Mali, Egypt, and Morocco.
