Mawuli Wayo climbed off the bench to hand Hearts of Oak a deserving comeback victory over Accra Lions.
Hearts of Oak climaxed a challenging 2024 with an emphatic victory at the WAFA Park in Sogakope, Volta Region, when they took on the young Accra Lions side.
The Ivorian head coach of Hearts highlighted the importance of his second-half substitutions, including the game-changer, Mawuli Wayo.
“We couldn’t make it and Wayo came, Karikari (Martin), and all these players came to change the game and take the three points, that’s the important thing.”
Mohammed Hussein broke the deadlock in the 36th minute of the game as he headed home a lovely cross to make it 0-1 for Hearts.
However, Nigerian national Lucky Nwafor brought Accra Lions level seven minutes into the second-half before Ezekiel Alladoh appeared to have given the home side all three points when he scored from an obvious offside position.
Mawuli Wayo, who has put in a great shift for the Phobians since joining the team at the start of the 2024-25 season fired a powerful low-drive from outside the box to restore parity in the 81st minute.
The super-sub completed his brace three minutes with a looping header over Lions’ goalkeeper Danie Afful to hand an important win for Hearts.
