Osibisa Legend Teddy Osei to Be Laid to Rest on April 5
The burial mass for legendary Ghanaian musician and saxophonist Teddy Osei, a founding member of the iconic Afro-rock band Osibisa, will take place on Saturday, April 5, at St. Peter’s Basilica, Roman Hill, Kumasi, at 9:00 a.m.
Before the mass, Osei will be laid in state at his family house in Chirapatre, Kumasi, at 8:00 a.m. He will be interred at the Chirapatre Royal Cemetery following the burial service.
A thanksgiving service is scheduled for Sunday, April 6, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Chirapatre, with final funeral rites to follow from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the family house.
Osei, who passed away at 88 on January 14, 2025, was born in Kumasi and developed a passion for music from an early age. He began playing the saxophone while attempting to form a band with his college friends in Sekondi.
After a brief stint as a building inspector, he formed “The Comets,” a band that gained some popularity. In 1962, he moved to London on a Ghanaian government scholarship to study music and drama but had to leave due to political changes in Ghana.
In 1969, Osei co-founded Osibisa, a band that brought Afro-rock to the global stage in the 1970s. Though its prominence waned over the years, the band remains active.
Teddy Osei leaves behind a lasting musical legacy that continues to inspire generations.
