Newcastle returned to winning ways in the Premier League at St James’ Park with an emphatic win over Chelsea.
After an hour, Lascelles’ free header from Gordon’s cross put the Magpies ahead 2-1. Ninety seconds later, Joelinton doubled the home team’s lead after taking advantage of a mistake made by Thiago Silva.
And with seven minutes left, Gordon scored his fifth goal of the year to complete a convincing win for Newcastle, who had lost their last game away to Bournemouth.
Lewis Miley, 17, slid a pass to Alexander Isak, who calmly finished past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to open the scoring.
Ten minutes later, Raheem Sterling’s wonderful free kick brought the Blues level, but in the second half, Chelsea went off as they got punished by goals from Joelinton and Lascelles to make it 3-1.
Reece James received a second yellow card for fouling Gordon, bringing them down to 10 men, and the former Everton player scored the last goal late in the game.
With the victory, Newcastle closes the gap on fourth-place Tottenham to just three points, while Chelsea’s fifth league loss of the year drops them to just inside the top half.
