The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has officially adopted the findings and recommendations of the Amarkai Amartefio Committee, formed to investigate the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.
In a statement issued Friday, May 23, the Ministry confirmed that the Minister, in collaboration with the National Sports Authority, had reviewed and accepted the committee’s report. “The recommendations will be implemented,” the statement read. “The public should expect a rollout of activities and reforms in the coming days in line with the committee’s findings.”
The committee, chaired by Ambassador Major (Rtd.) Amarkai Amarteifio, was established on April 8, 2025, by Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams (MP), following the fatal incident at Bukom Boxing Arena on March 9, 2025, during Fight Night 15.
Gabriel Olanrewaju collapsed during the bout and died weeks later. The committee submitted its final report on Monday, May 19, 2025.
Throughout its investigation, the committee interviewed eyewitnesses, medical staff, and sports officials, and examined video evidence and documentation related to the match. Its primary mandate was to determine the events leading to the boxer’s death and identify any lapses in safety, medical response, or regulatory enforcement.
The Ministry has not publicly disclosed the specific recommendations in the report.
