Prosecutors opened the trial of Diego Maradona’s medical team, alleging “solid” evidence of negligence in what they called the “horror theatre” of his final days.
“Today, Diego Armando Maradona, his children, his relatives, and the Argentine people deserve justice,” prosecutor Patricio Ferrari told the court.
Maradona, 60, died of a heart attack at home in 2020 while recovering from brain surgery. Prosecutors argue his death was preventable and accuse medical staff of negligence, while the defense claims he refused further treatment and should have remained hospitalized.
If convicted of “homicide with possible intent,” the defendants face 8 to 25 years in prison.
