NCA Shuts Down 62 FM Stations Including Happy FM, Asaase Radio, and Wontumi FM for Regulatory Breaches
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has ordered 62 FM stations across Ghana, including Happy FM, Asaase Radio, and Wontumi FM, to suspend operations immediately due to persistent regulatory violations.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 12, the NCA cited serious breaches of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991)—specifically Regulations 54 and 56, as well as non-compliance with the conditions tied to their broadcasting licenses.
This nationwide enforcement follows a directive from the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation after a recent audit exposed widespread non-compliance in the FM broadcasting sector.
Key Violations Identified:
- 28 stations continue to operate with expired authorizations, despite prior warnings in 2024 to cease broadcasting.
- 14 stations received authorizations but failed to commence operations within two years, violating Regulation 54.
- 13 stations with Provisional Authorizations have not completed required fee payments, rendering them ineligible to broadcast.
- 7 stations paid fees but have not been issued final authorisations due to unmet requirements under Regulation 54.
The NCA emphasized that none of the affected stations currently hold valid authorisations or certificates of compliance and must resolve all infractions before returning on air.
While recognizing the essential role of FM stations in national development, the NCA stressed that adherence to broadcasting regulations is non-negotiable.
“Failure to comply with this directive constitutes a serious breach and may lead to severe consequences,” the statement warned.
The NCA reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order and regulatory integrity in Ghana’s broadcasting landscape and urged all authorized operators to comply fully with licensing terms and obligations.
