The Ghana Premier League returned this weekend with a solemn tribute to Nana Pooley, the devoted Asante Kotoko fan tragically stabbed to death at Nsoatre Stadium in early February.
All teams observed a minute’s silence in his honor before kick-off, following directives from the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
His death, which led to the league’s temporary suspension, has prompted stricter security measures to combat hooliganism. Asante Kotoko players paid their respects with a special banner, commemorating Pooley’s unwavering dedication, having followed the team nationwide.
Pooley was laid to rest on Thursday, March 6, 2025. As a further mark of respect, GFA permitted players to wear black armbands during the weekend’s matches. Division One and Women’s Premier League teams had already honored his memory in their fixtures.
His tragic passing has reignited calls for decisive action against hooliganism, with authorities reinforcing security to safeguard players, officials, and fans.
