Surprise package of the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Malawi will have Ghana on Sunday evening.
The Malawians have been impressive in the tournament so far, beating defending champions Nigeria in their Group C opener before brushing aside Egypt next.
Having topped their group despite their defeat to the now-eliminated Zambians, Malawi booked a showdown with the Black Queens of Ghana.
Talking to the media before the game, captain Tabitha Chawinga expressed respect for Ghana as a team and coach Kim Lars Bjoëkegren, but revealed Malawi is well prepared just as their opponents.
“Ghana knows Malawi, and Malawi knows Ghana very well. Ghana has a good squad. I hope by the end of the day Malawi can be celebrating as well as Ghana. I know the coach from Ghana [Kim Lars]. He is my best friend,” said Chawinga.
The Black Queens defeated Malawi in a pre-tournament friendly, but the Malawians looked better than did in the friendly against Ghana.
With the Black Queens having scraped through to the quarterfinals after a hard-fought 1-1 with Mali, they would have to improve their performance to book a semifinal qualification and a place at the next Women’s World Cup.
