Ghana and South Africa sign visa waiver agreement for ordinary passport holders

Date:

The governments of Ghana and South Africa have signed a visa waiver agreement for holders of ordinary passports, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana announced in a press release today.

South Africa and Ghana Agree on 90-Day Visa Exemption for Ordinary Passport Holders Starting November 1, 2023. This is a breakdown of the agreement:

1. Duration of Stay: Ordinary passport holders are allowed to stay in South Africa for a cumulative period of ninety (90) days per year.
2. Starting Date: This policy takes effect from 01 November 2023, meaning that from that date onward, visitors can stay for up to 90 days in South Africa each year.
3. 12-Month Period: The ninety (90) days are calculated within a rolling twelve (12) months period. This means that if you enter South Africa on any date, you can stay for up to 90 days within the following twelve months from that date.
4. Visa Requirement: If the cumulative stay of 90 days is exhausted within the twelve-month period, ordinary passport holders must apply for a visa to enter South Africa. This implies that if you’ve spent a maximum of 90 days in South Africa within a year, you cannot visit again until the twelve-month period resets unless you obtain a visa.

The agreement is expected to boost tourism and trade between the two countries. It will also make it easier for family and friends to visit each other.

Travelers are advised to check with their airline or embassy for more information on the requirements for entering Ghana or South Africa under the new visa waiver agreement.
