Ex-Barcelona star Seydou Keita visits Algeria for trade

Date:

Former Malian football star Seydou Keita has embarked on a significant visit to Algeria to strengthen economic ties between the North African nation and West African markets.

The ex-FC Barcelona midfielder, now a thriving businessman, toured the Algerian Meat Canning Company, a key subsidiary of the Bellat Group. His visit highlights a growing interest among African economic players in Algeria’s expanding agri-food sector.

Keita’s primary objective was to evaluate the potential for exporting premium Algerian products to Mali and other Sahel markets, thereby enhancing the presence of Algerian brands across Africa.

During his tour, he explored the company’s cutting-edge industrial facilities and was particularly impressed by the advanced technologies ensuring compliance with international quality standards. This commitment to excellence aligns with the Bellat Group’s strategy to expand beyond Algeria’s borders.

Beyond business, the potential partnership between Keita and the Bellat Group reflects a broader push for South-South cooperation, reinforcing intra-African economic exchanges. This initiative aligns with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework, which aims to boost intra-African trade by 35% by 2045.

Since retiring from football in 2017, Keita has spearheaded multiple business ventures, including the Seydou Diogo Awa Agro-Industrial Complex in Mali, projected to create up to 10,000 jobs.

This collaboration could serve as a catalyst for stronger trade integration between Algeria and its African neighbors, particularly in the Sahel region.
