Chelsea advanced to the Carabao Cup semifinals by defeating Newcastle 4-2 on penalties.
Newcastle had taken the lead thanks to a goal from Callum Wilson, but Mykhailo Mudryk’s goal late in the game tied the score at one and forced penalties.
The match-winning save from Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic denied an attempt by Matt Ritchie during the penalty shootout.
Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher, Christopher Nkunku, and Mudryk all found the net, but Newcastle’s penalties came from Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes, causing them more heartbreak following their Champions League elimination.
