Appiah, former technical head of the black stars got off to a flying start during the qualifiers by beating South Africa and São Tomé in the opening two group matches.

Akonnor eventually took over from Kwesi Appiah after Ghana’s game against São Tomé away from home.

“First of all let me thank my former boss Kwesi Appiah. He started all this before I took over,” he told the media.

The former Ghana captain will be leading the Black Stars in next year’s tournament to be played in Cameroon.
