CAF Awards 2022: Check out full list of winners

Date:

After helping the Teranga Lions win their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations championship, Senegal’s star forward Sadio Mane was named Africa’s Men’s Player of the Year at the CAF Awards 2022. Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala broke a previous record by winning her fifth Women’s Player of the Year honor.

Senegal’s coach, Aliou Cisse, was voted Africa’s Coach of the Year during a glitzy event in Rabat, the capital of Morocco. Senegal was also named National Team of the Year on this memorable evening.

Mane, who also won the 2019 version: the prior year, continues to hold the CAF African Player of the Year award. He just departed English club Liverpool after a trophy-laden tenure with the Reds, and after joining Bayern Munich, he became the star player in the German Bundesliga.

Oshoala has now surpassed her fellow countrywoman Perpetua Nkwocha to become the first person to win the African Player of the Year award five times in a row.

Desiree Ellis, head coach of South Africa’s women’s national team, was named Africa’s Coach of the Year in the women’s football category. Banyana Banyana will play host nation Morocco in the final of the 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr, who made his international debut at the age of 18 and was a member of Senegal’s AFCON 2021 winning side, was voted Africa’s Young Player of the Year to cap off a big night for the Teranga Lions.

The ceremony for the awards was held at the spectacular Mohamed VI Technical Centre in Sale, Rabat, Morocco, and was attended by many of the best football figures and athletes from Africa.

Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco was honored as Africa’s Club of the Year in the men’s division in recognition of their victory in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2022.

Mamelodi Sundowns FC of South Africa was awarded Africa’s women’s Club of the Year in 2021 after winning both the inaugural TotalEnergies Women’s Champions League in Egypt and their domestic league.

Evelyn Bau of Ghana won both the Interclub Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year honors on the evening after leading Hasaacas Ladies to victory in the first-ever TotalEnergies Women’s Champions League and taking home the Golden Boot.

Mohamed El Shenawy, a great goalie for Al Ahly and Egypt’s national team, was named the male Interclub Player of the Year.

Another Senegalese player, Pape Ousmane Sakho of Simba, earned the CAF Goal of the Year award for the men’s and women’s mixed gender category for his amazing overhead goal against Asec Mimosa in a TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup group match.

After Saturday’s TotalEnergies Women’s Cup of Nations final between hosts Morocco and South Africa at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, the women’s National Team of the Year will be announced.
