BRAZIL 2014 INQUIRY: Some recommendations were partly implemented

Date:

Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has revealed that only some of the recommendations from the 2014 Commission of Inquiry he chaired were implemented by the government, while others were ignored.

Justice Dzamefe led the commission tasked by then-President John Dramani Mahama to probe Ghana’s poor showing and financial controversies at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where the Black Stars exited at the group stage.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, Justice Dzamefe said, “Some [recommendations] were implemented, but not all. We made many suggestions, but not all were taken.”

He cited key proposals that were overlooked, including stopping the payment of appearance fees in cash and halting state sponsorship for supporters to travel for tournaments.

“We said players should not be paid in cash. What happened in Brazil—flying money there and seeing players carrying bundles—was a disgrace. We also recommended that government should not sponsor supporters for matches abroad,” he noted.

Justice Dzamefe’s comments highlight lingering concerns over accountability and sports governance reforms following Ghana’s 2014 World Cup fallout.
