Ghana erupted in jubilation as its beloved weightlifter, Winnifred Ntumi, seized the spotlight at the recent competition held at the GCB Hall of the University of Ghana.
With a display of sheer grit and determination, Ntumi emerged triumphant, clinching a gold and two silver medals – a historic feat for the host nation.
The 21-year-old powerhouse dominated the 49-kilogramme weight class, showcasing her prowess in both the Snatch and Clean and Jerk categories.
In a nail-biting showdown in the Snatch event, Ntumi’s impressive lift of 63kg secured her second place, narrowly trailing behind Mauritius’ Sheridane Pasnin, who clinched the gold with a lift of 64kg. Completing the podium was Madagascar’s Ny Hasina Andrimitantsoa Zo Lalainarinirina with a lift of 60kg.
Undeterred by the close competition, Ntumi unleashed her strength once again in the Clean and Jerk category. Despite her formidable lift of 81kg, she settled for second place as Tunisia’s Wada claimed the gold with an equally impressive lift. Zo Lalain and Pasnin rounded out the top spots with lifts of 80kg and 75kg, respectively.
However, it was Ntumi’s exceptional performance across both categories that earned her the ultimate prize – the gold medal in the overall 49kg category. With a total tally of 144, she solidified her status as a force to be reckoned with in the world of weightlifting.
Ntumi’s latest triumphs add yet another chapter to her illustrious career. Hailing from a background of success, she previously secured three bronze medals in the women’s 45kg events at the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco. Remarkably, at the tender age of 16, she clinched a bronze medal in the women’s 49kg bodyweight at the Africa Seniors Weightlifting Championship in Cairo, Egypt, showcasing her prodigious talent and determination.
Continuing her meteoric rise, Ntumi further etched her name in the annals of weightlifting history with a bronze medal at the World Championship/Commonwealth qualification held in Uzbekistan in December 2021.
As Ntumi basks in the glory of her latest triumphs, her unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence serve as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring athletes across Ghana and beyond. With her sights set on even greater heights, she remains a shining embodiment of talent, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of the Ghanaian people.
