A major fire outbreak has been confirmed by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) at its Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region, resulting in the interruptions of electricity supply in parts of the country.
Based on a press statement issued on April 23rd, 2026, the incident occurred at about 2:01 pm, affecting operations at the facility. Rapid response teams were quickly dispatched to the site and are working to control the situation and evaluate the level of damage.
The Akosombo Substation is a vital element of Ghana’s electricity transmission network linking power from key generation sources, such as the Volta River Authority, to distribution utilities and bulk customers nationwide.
Any disturbance at the facility is likely to have wider impacts across sections of the country, especially in areas relying on power transmitted through the eastern corridor of the grid.
GRIDCo said further updates will be provided when more details become available, including the cause of the fire and timelines for full restoration, and assured the public of a reliable electricity supply.
