The Ghana Education Service (GES) has imposed a two-year ban on three senior high schools in the Eastern Region.

The banned schools are Koforidua Senior High Technical School, New Juaben Senior High School, and New Nsutam Senior High Technical School.

The Regional Director of the Eastern Regional Directorate of the GES, Dr Mrs Ivy Asantewaa Owusu, cited section 2.17 of the GES Code of Conduct on Physical and Psychological Violence and provisions of the Eastern Region Schools and Colleges Sports Association Code of Discipline as the basis of the ban.

“The students in your school were found engaging in acts of hooliganism, which are unacceptable and contradict the rule of discipline in GES,” read a portion of the directive.

Aside from being barred from “organising, spectating or taking part in all sporting activities, including quizzes, debates, cadetting and entertainments, in the school, zone and region”, which takes immediate effect, each school is ordered to pay a fine of GHC500.

The schools would also bear the expense of any damage or injury to property or individuals, which shall be determined by a committee based on the extent of damage or injury.

Background

A student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School (KSTS/SecTech) suffered a machete attack by students of New Juaben SHS during the super zonal sports competition, which took place from February 4 to 6, 2026.

The aforementioned attack, according to the preliminary investigations of the Ghana Education Service Eastern Regional Directorate and the police, occurred 200 metres away from the competition venue.

In another incident, a female student of Osino Senior High School was allegedly raped in a bush close to the competition venue. Two students are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, with a third suspect at large.
