WAFCON 2024: Black Queens beats South Africa for bronze

Date:

Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens of Ghana, have completed their 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign as bronze medal winners.

The Black Queens capped off a superb return to Africa’s biggest women’s football tournament with a never-say-die victory over the soon-to-be dethroned champions of Africa, Banyana Banyana of South Africa.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Nonhlanhla Mthandi powered South Africa into a halftime lead before Ghana forced an own goal from Dlamani for a deserved equaliser in the 68th minute, forcing the tie into 30 minutes of extra time.

The Queens showed their attacking strength with continuous push and effort at the goal of their South African opponents, registering more than double of their shots on target despite having less of the ball.

Chantelle Boye-Hlorka’s miss did not deter the determined Queens from inflicting a 4-3 comeback shootout win on the mighty Banyana Banyana, as Cynthia Konlan proved to be hero again, saving two penalties.
