Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially issued a Ghanaian passport to football star Jérémy Baffour Doku, marking a major step in his journey to reconnect with his roots.
The Manchester City winger, who was born in Belgium to Ghanaian parents, received the passport during a brief but symbolic presentation ceremony held in Accra.
According to officials, the move fulfills a long-standing wish of Doku and his family to formally claim his Ghanaian heritage.
“This was the wish of Jérémy and his family when they called on me last week — I’m glad we successfully delivered chip-embedded passports today,” a Ministry spokesperson shared.
Though he currently plays for the Belgian national team, Doku is legally entitled to a Ghanaian passport as a dual citizen. His decision to pursue the document is widely seen as a personal and cultural statement — one that cements his enduring bond with Ghana.
The move has been warmly received by fans and officials alike, many of whom see it as a testament to Doku’s deep appreciation of his heritage. It also opens the door for broader collaborations between the player and Ghana in cultural, philanthropic, or ambassadorial roles.
While there is no official indication of a nationality switch in football terms, Doku’s symbolic gesture has ignited excitement across Ghana’s football community.
“I wish him the very best in his illustrious career,” added the Ministry official.
With this development, Jeremy Doku not only strengthens his legal identity as a Ghanaian but also sends a powerful message of belonging, pride, and unity across continents.
