Diogo Jota funeral details confirmed

Date:

The funerals of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Filipe Teixeira da Silva will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Gondomar, a town near Porto in northern Portugal.

The service was initially scheduled for Friday afternoon but was rescheduled to Saturday morning, according to Father Jose Manuel Macedo, the local priest officiating the ceremony. The delay reportedly stems from paperwork issues related to the brothers’ repatriation from Spain, where the tragic accident occurred.

A wake will be held at São Cosme Chapel, followed by a funeral mass at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, the town’s main Catholic church. Gondomar holds deep sentimental value for Jota, who started his football journey there and is believed to have met his wife in the town.

It remains unclear whether the ceremony will be held privately or opened to the public.

The sudden deaths of Diogo and André near Zamora, in northwestern Spain, have prompted an outpouring of grief from across the football world. Tributes have poured in from former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, club icon Sir Kenny Dalglish, and current head coach Arne Slot, along with teammates and fans worldwide.

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister shared on Instagram:

“I can’t believe it. I will always remember your smiles, your anger, your intelligence, your companionship and everything that made you a person. It hurts a lot, we will miss you. Rest in peace dear Diogo.”

Teammate Dominik Szoboszlai added:

“Words cannot describe how heartbroken and devastated we are… Your love for the game will never be forgotten. You will stay with us forever, on and off the pitch. Rest in peace, brother.”

As the world of football continues to mourn, Saturday’s funeral will offer a final farewell to a beloved forward and his brother—two lives lost far too soon.
