TOGO UNRESTS: 7 Dead, Dozens Injured

Date:

At least three people have died and dozens more injured following a wave of anti-government protests in Togo, violently dispersed by security forces over the weekend.

The demonstrations, spearheaded by online activists and youth civic groups, called for the release of political detainees and the resignation of President Faure Gnassingbé, who currently serves as President of the Council of Ministers.

Initially peaceful, the protests erupted into chaos as clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement broke out in the capital, Lomé—particularly in opposition strongholds like Bè. Protesters hurled stones, while security forces responded with tear gas and force. Eyewitnesses described scenes of street battles and home invasions by police.

Though official casualty figures remain unconfirmed, local media and rights organisations report at least seven deaths and numerous serious injuries.

On Sunday, the National Platform for Civic Space and Development Effectiveness, a coalition of 23 civil society organisations, condemned the “disproportionate use of force” and called for an independent investigation.

“Peaceful protest is a fundamental right,” the coalition stressed, referencing the Togolese Constitution and international law.

In a counter statement issued June 29, the government accused overseas organisers of promoting “disinformation, hatred, and incivility,” vowing to pursue legal action. Authorities also reiterated a nationwide ban on public demonstrations, in place since 2022 due to “security concerns.”

By Sunday, a tense calm had returned to Lomé, with some businesses—like Assigamé Market—reopening. However, fear and frustration remain high.

Some Togolese citizens abroad have voiced anger over the developments. Jonas Bogavi, living in Ghana, described how unrest has kept him from attending his grandmother’s funeral in Togo.

“I planned to ride my motorbike home this weekend, but what I’m seeing online has made me stay away,” he said.

President Faure Gnassingbé has been in power since 2005, succeeding his father, President Eyadéma Gnassingbé. With no term limits tied to his current role, criticism of dynastic rule continues to mount.

Adding fuel to public anger was the psychiatric detention of rapper Aamron (Narcisse Essowè Tchalla) in May. His arrest triggered protests on June 6, where over 50 demonstrators were arrested. Though many have been released, at least three remain in custody.

As tensions linger, pressure is growing on the Togolese government to embrace political reform, transparency, and civil liberty protections.
