Why is Anthony Joshua in Ghana?

Date:

Two-time heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua has arrived in Ghana to lend his support and attend the highly anticipated “Battle of the Beasts” boxing event, slated for Friday, June 13, 2025, at the iconic Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

The arrival of the British-Nigerian boxing icon has created a media buzz and amplified excitement ahead of what is set to be one of the most electrifying nights in Ghanaian boxing history.

The event is spearheaded by Sharaf Mahama, CEO of Legacy Rise Sports and the son of  President John Dramani Mahama. Sharaf has emerged as a passionate promoter of sports, particularly boxing, and is determined to raise the profile of Ghanaian fighters on the global stage.

His latest project, “Battle of the Beasts,” aims to showcase top-tier local talent alongside international contenders in a night packed with action, drama, and history-making moments.

The main event sees Ghana’s Jacob “The Beast” Dickson square off against American Andrew Tabiti for the prestigious WBC Africa Bridgerweight title. The stakes are high, and the bout has already drawn significant attention from both regional and international boxing circles.

Joshua’s presence at the event is more than ceremonial—it symbolizes the alignment of global boxing stars with grassroots efforts to elevate African boxing. His attendance reinforces the credibility of the event and highlights Ghana as a serious player on the international boxing scene.

“Anthony Joshua’s support is a testament to how far Ghanaian boxing has come,” Sharaf Mahama noted. “This isn’t just a fight night—it’s a statement that Ghana is ready for the global stage.”

The event will also feature several undercard matchups, including Daniel Selassie Gorsh defending his WBO Africa Bantamweight title, and appearances from rising stars like Abubakar Kamoko (Bukom Tilapia), son of boxing legend Bukom Banku.

With a high-profile weigh-in, strong media coverage, and the participation of boxing royalty like Joshua, the “Battle of the Beasts” is set to be a landmark moment in African sports promotion—one that brings together the local passion for boxing and the global community that supports it.

The event will air live on Max TV, giving fans across Ghana and beyond the chance to witness boxing history in the making.
