Court of Appeal to rule on Ataa Ayi

Date:

The Court of Appeal will deliver its judgment on June 5 in the case of Yaw Asante Agyeman, an alleged accomplice of notorious armed robber Ataa Ayi, who is challenging his 35-year sentence.

Asante Agyeman, a mechanic, was sentenced in December 2002 for conspiracy to commit robbery, serving over 20 years of his term.

His lawyer, Bernard Kwabena Shaw, argued in court on April 28 that there was no evidence connecting Asante Agyeman to the robberies. The prosecution claimed that the bikes used in Ataa Ayi’s crimes were repaired at Asante Agyeman’s workshop, leading to his involvement in the conspiracy charge.

Despite the lack of legal representation at the time, Asante Agyeman was sentenced alongside other suspects. After eight years of legal proceedings, the court is set to rule on the appeal.
