MAX FEEDBACK: Ghana Water MD inspects water plants for shortfalls

Date:

The  Acting Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL),Adam Mutawakilu, has embarked on a system-wide assessment of key water treatment plants in Accra to identify operational challenges and implement immediate solutions to boost production.

This visit follows management’s recognition of critical issues affecting water supply and the urgent need for interventions to bridge the demand-supply gap. Engaging with plant engineers and operators, Mr. Mutawakilu evaluated infrastructure conditions, technical constraints, and priority areas requiring upgrades.

Accra’s daily water demand stands at 220 million gallons, yet production capacity remains at only 130 million gallons—leaving a shortfall of 90 million gallons. In response, the MD reaffirmed GWL’s commitment to optimizing operations, upgrading infrastructure, and integrating modern technology to enhance supply.

He emphasized the need for swift action in equipment maintenance, system upgrades, and infrastructure improvements to ensure reliable water availability for the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area. Accompanied by Chief Managers and the Acting Deputy Managing Director for Operations, he assured stakeholders that both short-term and long-term measures were being implemented to sustain water supply.

Beyond treatment plants, Mr. Mutawakilu inspected strategic installations such as the Mile 18 Central Workshop—where major pipe, pump, and drainage system repairs are conducted—and the Central Store, which houses essential chemicals and materials.

The tour, covering the Weija, Kpong, and Accra Desalination Plants, provided firsthand insight into the challenges hindering optimal water production and reinforced GWL’s commitment to improving service delivery.
