Ghanaian broadcaster Serwaa Amihere has shared her emotional journey of overcoming the challenges following the circulation of an intimate video purportedly involving her last year. Speaking at the Ignite Youth Empowerment
Thanksgiving Service, she recounted how the incident affected her and the role her close friend, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, played in helping her navigate a difficult time.
Serwaa revealed she struggled with depression during the ordeal. “I was depressed and crying at home,” she said. “Then Obuobia came and said, ‘Let’s go and buy ice cream.’ I wasn’t speaking to anyone, but she took me to Osu and encouraged me not to hide my face. She bought me a big cup of ice cream and told me to enjoy it. That small gesture lifted my spirits.”
Expressing gratitude, Serwaa added: “Auntie Obuobia, thank you because I never told you how much that ride meant to me. It did me a lot of good.”
The leaked video, which surfaced on April 2, 2024, created a media storm and led to an investigation by her employer, EIB Network. In a statement on July 5, 2024, the network cleared Serwaa of any misconduct and confirmed that criminal proceedings were ongoing against those accused of unlawfully sharing the video.
Reflecting on her experience, Serwaa cautioned young people about the consequences of their choices. “Last year was extremely difficult for me. I urge you to be careful about the decisions you make, as they can come back to haunt you. That’s what happened to me.”
Serwaa also praised Obuobia’s unwavering kindness and support, calling her “an amazing person” and expressing her love and appreciation for her continued guidance and encouragement.
