Many musicians stormed the industry as a force to be reckoned with, but at the height of their careers, they disappeared either by taking a hiatus or no longer giving hit tracks, thus not being recognized again.
We had various musicians, ranging from high-life to hip-hop, who the industry received well but could not sustain the hype.
Below is a list of six musicians who could not sustain the hype at the peak of their careers.
1. Kumi Guitar
Born Nana Yaw Kumi, he was crowned with the stage name ‘Kumi Guitar’ from Zap Mallet while Zap Mallet trained him to be a guitarist. He became a professional singer in 2011 and treated Ghanaians to urban highlife tunes that made him one of the most loved artistes the industry possessed.
The versatile highlife musician looked promising, and in 2017, he signed a record five-year management contract with Zylofon Media, a new creative arts company that shot into disrepute. Kumi Guitar has over the years been treating the world to a mixture of highlife, contemporary highlife, and genre melodies and has gained various nominations for Ghana Music Awards.
Since he released S.E.X. in 2020, he has not revived his craft in the industry.
2. Quamina Mp
He is a talent who shot to fame in 2017 after being adopted into the talent recruiting and music management platform, Ground Up Chale. Under that group, he surprised Ghanaians with his hit tracks Wiase Y3d3 and Amanfour Girls.
He lost his dad in November 2020 to a road accident after they were traveling together, and since then, Emmanuel Kwamina Amonoo, as known privately, has not been able to bounce back, though he has been singing.
3. Bosom P-Yung
Known for his distinct trap sound, quirky persona, and captivating performance as a rapper, Bosom P-Yung got many Ghanaians mesmerized when he released Ataa Adwoa during the era of COVID-19.
His presence in the industry was quickly endorsed by rap giant Sarkodie. With his unique creativity, originality, and commitment to pushing the boundaries of Ghanaian hip-hop, he earned great collaborations with Wendy Shay and Lord Paper.
With his unique blend of trap, Afrobeats, and highlife influences, he quickly emerged as one of the most talked-about artists in the Ghanaian music scene, captivating listeners with his unconventional style and magnetic stage presence.
His fame, however, did not see the light of day and is now galloping in the industry to rewin the hearts of music enthusiasts.
4. Freda Rhymes
Being the first female to have won MTN hitmaker, Season 6, “Datchickno” became a household name and an inspiration to many young girls who wanted to embrace rap music.
Freda Rhymes got signed to Black Avenue Muzik and was sizzling in the industry. No one can mention the top two female rappers in Ghana without her name being mentioned. She released three official singles between March 2018 and May 2019 under Black Avenue Muzik with ‘Pay,’ an Afrobeats/Hip-hop song that featured her label boss, D-Black, as the hot song in town.
Freda did not lie low after her year-long record deal with Black Avenue Muzik ended; she immediately engaged in rap beef with Sister Afia and Eno Barony during the COVID-19 period to increase her fanbase. To the surprise of the fans, she released a track with Sister Afia, “Saucy.”
The track was massive, raising eyebrows and triggering conversations among fans of the beefing contenders. Since then, Freda has lost her relevancy in the industry.
5. Cabum
He is one of the talented rappers known mostly to industry players. However, he was able to break the cage with the hit song “Zakari,” which featured Stonebwoy and Sarkodie. The track was massive, and at a point it got banned as the Gas got offended by some stereotyping words in it.
Cabum gained momentum in the industry, and his rap hit hearts like cupid arrows. The moment he was expecting to chalk his name among those who got to love his music, he was knocked out into the ground again and has since not been able to cement his name among the new rap giants in the industry.
6. Bless
He was indeed a blessing in the industry to have rocked our world with “Chocho Mucho,” a banger that featured Kofi Kinaata. Bless became a revered highlife musician who was concerned about projecting our indigenous highlife music instead of how the current highlife musicians were corrupting the genre.
Search the Brain Entertainment signee Bless had the zeal to promote authentic Highlife tunes, but in 2021 he signed a new record deal and rebranded as KayBlez.
His music had since not been patronized after his signature song, Chocho Mucho.
