Ashanti King would have ruled over West Africa by now – Historian

Date:

Ghanaian historian and legal practitioner, Yaw Anokye Frimpong, says the Ashanti King would have ruled over West African countries if not for the introduction of politics and the crash of the Ashanti Empire in 1874.

According to him, the arrival of the Europeans destroyed the Ashanti dominion in West Africa.

Speaking in an interview with Max Morning Dew in Accra on Thursday, Anokye Frimpong said half of Ivory Coast, some part of Benin, and a small part of Nigeria were under the Ashanti Empire.

“And there’s no doubt that the Ashantis would have ruled over West Africa,” he stated.

The renowned historian said that before the invasion of the Europeans, Ashanti had a good friendly relationship with the Ewes and the Northerners, stressing that it enabled the Ashantis to conquer many lands in some parts of the West African countries.

Before the arrival of the Europeans, he observed that Ghana was ruled by the Ashanti King, just like Saudi Arabia and Dubai.

However, Anokye Frimpong noted that the introduction of politics and the 1874 crash of the Ashanti kingdom destroyed the bond between the Ashantis, the Northerners, and the Ewes, thus ending up as political rivals.

“If the whites hadn’t also come, all the West African countries would have been under the Ashanti Empire, looking at how the Ashanti Empire extended its tentacles. By now, the king of Ashanti would have ruled over us,” he added.
