Mount Gemi, also known as Mount Gemiwo (pronounced “geh-mee), is a mountain top in the Amedzofe village in Ghana’s Volta Region. It is part of the Akwapim-Togo Ranges, a mountain range that stretches across Ghana, Togo, and sections of Benin. The mountain is recognized for its natural splendor, rich flora, and panoramic views of the surrounding area. Mount Gemi is the second-tallest mountain in Ghana, standing at 777 m above sea level.
The name Gemi comes from a local name, which in the Sia language is called Ekemina. Ekemina is the name of the elephant grass surrounding the mountain in the olden days. But when the Germans arrived, they couldn’t pronounce the local name, Ekemina, so they named it Gemi, which stands for German Evangelical Mission Institute.
At the very peak of the mountain is a cross made of iron erected by the German missionaries in 1939, when they celebrated their 50th anniversary of settling and bringing Christianity to Amedzofe village. Also, during World War II, the cross was used as a communication antenna by the Germans.
A person’s character is put to the test during the mountain climb, but the reward for perseverance is reaching the peak. Sweat-drenched, beaming faces and the satisfaction of scaling Ghana’s second-highest peak created the ideal atmosphere for snapping an amazing photo next to the cross. But note that it is not so rosy at the top. The descent from the mountain is more difficult than the ascent. The steep edges would make you walk on pins and needles, but that’s a tale for another day. Going alone is nice, but being in a group is fun.
A trip to Amedzofe would be incomplete without a stop at Ote Falls.
