Ex-Kotoko striker: One-month salary in Algeria can take care of you for a year

Date:

Former Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Poku has spoken out about the financial gain he has seen since switching to the Algerian League from the Ghana Premier League(GPL).

After transferring from Nzema Kotoko to Asante Kotoko prior to the commencement of the 2020–2021 Ghana Premier League season, Kwame Poku departed the GPL giants in the middle of the campaign to join the USM Alger of Algeria.

The Black Stars striker’s contract was signed by USM Alger in 2021, when the Ghana Premier League was rumored to be in financial trouble, for $300,000.

Speaking about his time in Algeria after two years, Kwame Poku acknowledged that playing there has a significant financial benefit because he can get by on one month’s wage in Algeria.

“The Algerian league pays very well because one-month salary can take care of you for a whole year if you are someone who doesn’t spend on unnecessary things,” he said on Accra-based Angel FM.

He continued by saying that, similar to Ghana, they can survive for a while on a month’s wage, therefore it doesn’t matter if their salaries are delayed.

“We can sometimes go for five months without our salary being paid but the difference is that you are paid so well that it doesn’t affect us.”

Prior to joining USM Alger in the second half of the 2020–2021 Ghana Premier League, Kwame Poku scored 7 goals for Asante Kotoko.
