2022 World Cup: Substituting Kudus Mohammed in Portugal game was wrong – Maxwell Konadu

Date:

Maxwell Konadu, a former Black Stars assistant coach, has provided his analysis of Ghana’s loss to Portugal at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars put up a brave fight against the 2016 European Champions on Thursday.

Sadly, Portugal defeated Ghana 3-2 in their opening encounter of the tournament in Group H.

Coach Maxwell Konadu stated in an interview with an Accra-based FM station that he thought the outcome would have been different had the Black Stars played more bravely and with more openness.

He claimed that the addition of star attacker Mohammed Kudus in the second half did not improve the situation.

“We should have opened up the game after finding the equalizer. For me, changing Kudus was a bit wrong but probably the coach might have had a special reason why he did that, I can only imagine it was due to the yellow card he picked up.

“Kudus was on top of his game and we should have kept him for a while in my opinion. But maybe the coaches will give us some better explanation as to why they made those substitutions,” coach Maxwell Konadu said.

Ghana now shifts its focus to the second game against South Korea on Monday, November 28, following the loss to Portugal.
