2026 WCQ: Tough Challenge Ahead for Black Stars Against Mali – Sam Johnson

Sam Johnson, a former player of the illustrious Black Stars, offers insightful foresight into the daunting challenge awaiting Ghana in their imminent World Cup qualifier against Mali, set to unfold tonight in Bamako.

With Ghana currently occupying the fifth slot in Group I standings after two matches, clinching a victory against Mali is imperative to boost their positioning in the table.

Johnson articulates the gravity of the upcoming encounter, noting, “This is a team in transition, and it is going to be very tough. As soon as the draw was made, every Ghanaian knew that Mali were the favorites in this group, but it is turning out to be a very different scenario.”

His observation extends to the unforeseen strength demonstrated by Comoros, who managed to outplay Ghana with a narrow 1-0 victory in the previous leg. He underscores the formidable reputation of Mali as a powerhouse in African football, further emphasizing the uphill battle awaiting the Black Stars.

Acknowledging Ghana’s underdog status, Johnson reflects on the team’s transitional phase and the void left by departing seasoned players. He states, “And everyone knows the pedigree of Mali, a very very talented team so I must say for me enter the game as the underdogs no disrespect to the team and as a team in transition, who have lost a number of seasoned materials, so speaking from a professional perspective then I will say it is going to be a tough game.”

The highly anticipated match between Ghana and Mali at the Stade du 26 Mars stadium is slated to kick off at 19:00 GMT. Following this pivotal encounter, Ghana will turn their attention to hosting the Central African Republic in their matchday four fixture at the Baba Yara Stadium on June 10th.
