2026 FIFA WC Q: Torsten Spittler to retire after Rwanda stint

Date:

The head coach of the Rwandan national team, Torsten Spittler, has announced he will retire from coaching when his contract expires in November 2024.

Spittler, 62, has taken reigns of Nepal, Yemen, Sierra Leone, India, and Canada prior to his current stint with the Amavubi after beginning his coaching career as head coach of the Germany U-16 national team.

The German manager made this announcement after Rwanda’s goalless draw with the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday, September 10.

“After my contract ends in November, I’ll be heading into retirement,” he said in his post-match presser.

The Rwandan FA may have to convince the German to stay on as they top their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group ahead of South Africa and Nigeria.
