Medeama Sporting Club’s chances of advancing to the 2023–24 CAF Champions League knockout phase appear to have been shattered after they were humiliated 3-0 by Young Africans on Wednesday in Dar es Salaam.
The Tanzanians showed signs of being a solid team at Baba Yara when they faced Medeama in the first leg, as coach of the Ghanaian side, Evans Adotey, admitted his boys were even lucky to come out of the game with a point.
Yanga’s performance and skill set were far different in the second match on Wednesday, as they dominated the Yellow and Mauves with some entertaining football.
Miguel Angel Gamondi, coach of Yanga, couldn’t hide his joy insisting the result has revived their campaign.
“It was one of the best games we have played this campaign. We analyzed our game and played real football in all aspects,” Gamondi said in the post match press conference.
“We have given our fans happiness and that’s what football is all about. I told the players to believe as we searched for a win today. I’m more than happy for the answers today,” he said after the match.
Yanga moved above Medeama to second in the group, tied with the same number of points as leaders, Al Ahly, whose game against CR Belouizdad was postponed due to the latter’s participation at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup iin Saudi Arabia.
Despite acknowledging that they fell short of expectations, Evans Augustine Adotey is adamant that they would persevere through the group stage.
“Our ambition to get three points today have failed. We have two more games and we shall assess the situation,” the coach of the Ghanaian side told the media.
“We shall fight for the remaining six points. Young Africans deserved the win but we could have avoided all the three goals.”
Without the suspended Jonathan Sowah, Medeama will have a difficult challenge ahead of them to defeat Al Ahly in Kumasi and secure a spot in the knockout rounds before heading to Algeria to play CR Belouizdad in the final group game.
